Misunderstandings in purchasing protective films

2020/3/27

There are a wide variety of protective film products, and the definitions of various parameters such as "99% transmittance" and "4H hardness" are confusing. Many consumers who are not familiar with the concept believe it to be true and are heavily deceived by unscrupulous merchants. This website is specially designed for everyone to attend classes, scan for literacy, and explain a few common cognitive misconceptions in detail.

1. 99% transmittance: Firstly, the claimed "99% transmittance" of many protective film products is actually impossible to achieve. Currently, optical glass has the highest transmittance, which is only about 97%. Screen protectors made of plastic materials cannot achieve a level of 99% light transmittance, so those who promote "99% light transmittance" are exaggerating. Only a few high-quality mobile phone film products on the market can achieve a light transmittance of about 95%, and BG Weiluo Si is one of them. However, the light transmittance of low-quality film is generally below 80%, which seriously affects the screen display effect and indirectly reduces the brightness of the screen. Long term use can increase eye fatigue.

2. 4H Wear Resistance: It is common to see some mobile phone protective film products on the market labeled with "4H", "5H" or even higher wear resistance/hardness, but most of these are not actual wear resistance. Firstly, everyone must understand the "rainbow pattern" of protective films.

The so-called "rainbow pattern" is because the substrate needs to undergo a high temperature during hardening treatment, and during the high temperature treatment, the uneven molecular structure on the surface of the substrate causes scattering. The higher the strength of the hardening treatment, the more difficult it is to control the rainbow pattern. The presence of rainbow patterns affects transparency and visual effects. High quality protective film is difficult to see rainbow patterns with the naked eye after application.

So the rainbow pattern is actually a product of hardening treatment. The higher the intensity of hardening treatment, the stronger the rainbow pattern of the protective film. Under the premise of not affecting the visual effect, the best hardening treatment effect is generally only between 3.5H and 3.8H. Exceeding this value is either a false report of wear resistance or a prominent rainbow pattern.

3. Electrostatic adsorption: The phone screen and protective film are not absolutely smooth, and relying solely on electrostatic adsorption is impossible to firmly adhere and ensure that the protective film does not fall off. The statement about electrostatic adsorption is not entirely correct, strictly speaking, it should be called "silicone electrostatic adsorption". The pasting of protective film certainly has certain electrostatic factors, but the most important thing is to rely on the adhesion of silicone on the film. However, this layer of silicone itself has weak adhesion, but when applied to the surface of the screen, the protective film can be fully adsorbed. This is also the reason why fingers cannot touch the adsorption layer on the back of the protective film during the film application process
